Bye Bye, Audi S6

You will be missed!  But never forgotten…

Late last year my search had begun for a car that could do it all.  My Volkswagen Touareg SUV was great, but I wanted something more sporty in nature.  Retrospectively it would have made more sense to wait a few years, paying off the Touareg, keeping it there after and getting a nice 3rd car toy.  But I digress…

Since the start of 2014 my focus had shifted specifically to finding a nice Audi S6 or S7.  It seemed like a grand idea at the time, a dream car on so many levels for me.  How many cars exist that can haul four adults comfortably, yet still muster sub-4-second 0-60 times?  And with a trunk that can swallow plenty of content, all-wheel-drive for Ohio winters, and four-doors for the family … the C7 platform is just perfect!

Within the content of this blog I’ve written extensively about the Audi S6 that I purchased (see posts HERE, HERE, and HERE).  When I first found the car there was the typical uphill battle of wife-approval.  That is to be expected when you’re trying to procure a car payment that rivals your home mortgage payment.  There were also a few hiccups with the dealership with regards to final loan details.  Very few people know this but I had actually put a deposit down on the car, but decided to walk away and get a refund.  Then a few weeks passed, things changed a bit on both ends, and the deal was able to be completed to my satisfaction at that time.

It was during the initial 10-hour drive home from Alabama in the S6 that I began to instantly realize that which makes the Audi S6 such a great car is also what would prove to make it a bit of an excessive item.  Not just in the exorbitant price tag it carried, but with regards also to the power and technology.  To date I’ve clocked over 3,000 miles in the S6 in just a period of 6-weeks, becoming quite decently acquainted with the vehicle.

Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty to love about this car, as I’ve detailed nicely in my prior blog posts.  But at the end of the day there was always one big thing hovering over me, which was the cost.  In the past I have had cheaper cars, leaving room in my budget to add modifications, take the car to a track event, and so forth.  Suddenly I found myself wanting to track this car, but knowing that the imminent cost of tire replacement and brake pad upgrades, plus seat time, would put me well beyond my comfort zone.  Heck, the car payment itself alone made me cringe every time I thought about it.

Previously I’ve made comments about how this car feels like a caged animal.  This past weekend a friend of mine said it right, he “would not trust himself with a car like” the S6.  And I’m inclined to agree, as I’ve found myself well in excess of the speed limit more times than I care to admit.  I’ve long said that 350-400 horsepower is the most any car really needs (so long as the vehicle isn’t too heavy/big).  I’m also a small guy (5’3″ on a good day) so cars like those in the Audi B8 chassis actually fit me better than the C7 chassis.

At the end of the day it comes down to simply this: While I loved the S6, it was just more money than I really wanted to spend at this point in my life.  While the car exceeded my expectations and I love it dearly, it more importantly exceeds my financial comfort.  I don’t need to justify myself to anyone but my family, but I’m posting this so that I don’t have to repeat myself over-and-over to the various friends who are sure to ask why I traded in my dream car.  Some day, perhaps when my daughter is out of college, my house is paid for, and my priorities in life have shifted, I’ll own another monster of a car like this.  For now I’ll be happy with something half as expensive… and use some of that extra money to tinker, of course, while focusing on more important things in life.

  1. Ah, fiscal responsibility is the most horrendous burden. While I mourn your loss of the S6, I am interested in what your take is on the Allroad.
